Before being and artist or anything else, one has to be a responsible and true world citizen. World is flat today. Nationalities are passe. We have to all think of ourselves as children of one mother: Mother Earth. If you think of anyone who has achieved the peak success in their profession, they would always be humble, they would always remember where they came from, and will have an innate sense of right or wrong.

As they say with great power comes great responsibilities. Try to achieve not what is good for you, but what is good for everyone around you.

Seven Habits of Highly Effective people

Monk who sold his Ferrari

M. K. Gandhi who was ideal of Martin Luther King the world over. He taught nothing new. He just implemented the principles of truth, non violence and responsible living in the times he lived in. He learnt from Mohammad, Jesus and age old Hindu texts and put those theories in practice which helped the world around him.

Today frugal living is essential for the health of our planet, and a modern term "Permaculture" is coined for this purpose.

What this essentially means is can we minimize our use of resources and move towards energy, food and water independence.

For lesser beings like us we can help a lot by thinking before buying anything, that new dress, that new car. Even simple actions like switching on that light, leaving that tap running, buying LED and solar lights, solar water heaters, reducing our energy needs, recycling or composting our waste we can make a difference. Before buying anything think of how much packaging went into it, buy products closest to their natural forms.

With each resource you waste, you use up so much from your children's resources. Akshay Patra midday meal scheme which has been instrumental in pulling the literacy figures in India said once: " I donate one thing for everything I buy". These words always play in my mind.

It is difficult to summarize everything what should be done, but here is what I have experiences personally, and what has worked for me.

Food

GM Diet has taught me how adding more fruits and veggies and cutting carbs to our bodies you can meet your antioxident needs, cut the calorie intake, reduce your medication and be aware of every morsel you eat. And I do enjoy sinfully loaded meals also sometime, but I know why I am eating them, "just to satisfy mu taste buds" for nourishment I have to eat different. Now I do not feel the need to eat frozen or restaurant meals so much, have reduced the visits to my doctor and do not need to follow any expensive diet for weight loss. Now my family also has started following similar diet and we are surprised we eat at least 50% less than what we used to, without feeling weak or drained, and are reaching our goal weights.

Body and Soul

I am suffering from Fybromyalgia, allergic rhinitis, hypothyroid, Osteopenia, Vertigo, Sinusitis and Migraine. At 35 the list of my diseases cannot be any longer. The diet changes I mentioned before, with ensuring meeting my protein calcium and antioxidant requirement through lentils, greens, fruits and lemons, I feel my body much lighter, much more flexible, and with less pains. Yoga proved to be my panacea, after many painful hours and money wasted on Gyms, doctors and physio therapies. Not that none of these helped, they did but each one had only part of the solution, for the other part I had to run to someone else. Then one of the doctors started me on Yoga and also told me to restart art. I did both,"Art" tool care of my soul and "yoga" my body. The trick is never to push yourself in any pose, but just keep doing each pose to the best of your ability. Your bodies strength and flexibility will improve each day and you will be surprised at what you can accomplish. After two years of practice I can do a perfect Halasana . It is my same body, which could not raise its both legs simultaneously, while lying down. Today I just do this pose once, to get rid of any back pain I have... In the beginning it is wise to find a trained Yoga Instructor for ex local yoga classes near you. Then you can access the wealth of material available in your library, internet, even you tube. Meditation, deep breathing and living by my principals keeps me calm.

Art

It is ironical that you see all my paintings here, and I have nothing to recommend you on art. For I believe art is not made from the skill, but from the soul. The value of art is not in the money it forces to change hands, but the souls it stirs. Having said that, I am still trying to find a way to pay my bills, without having to sell my art. Well that's a different story altogether.

But for someone who is hoping to get some advice from me on art, I have only the following to say:

1. Your eyes and souls are the greatest tools you have. If you can really see something you can paint it. When I say see I say really see the shade variations of green on a single leaf, millions of reflections on a single droplet of water. Well if you feel those, you will learn to "really" see them, and hence will be able to paint.

2. Surprisingly seeing like an artist needs practice, because seeing is an "involuntary" action. The trick that works for me is to keep drawing and painting. Once I have my output on paper, I can compare it with what I see and correct it. if it does not work, I use my camera to teach me. I take a picture and compare with my output. It takes time but I am eventually able to get it right.

3. If I do not feel for something, no matter how hard I try, I cannot paint it. For example what keeps me kicking are my concepts. If I need to portray something realistically for the idea to be conveyed I am able to toil for it, else nothing can make me do the necessary work.

4. Just keep painting for images come from your subconscious and reach your subconscious directly.

Keep reading, keep watching good movies, get inspired by others, by nature, by feelings, anything that makes sense to you. Use the resources around you , free paid, internet, books, make everyone and everything your teacher...
